Should I get tested?
Various behaviors can increase your changes of getting HIV. You should get an HIV test if you are involved with or plan on continuing these behaviors. We also encourage meeting with a healthcare provider or a counselor to determine a testing frequency that is right for you.
Behavior that increases you chance of HIV
- Injecting drugs or steroids or shared equipment (such as needles, syringes, works) with others
- Having unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex with anonymous single or multiple partners.
- Exchanging sex for drugs or money
- Being diagnosed with or treated for hepatitis, tuberculosis (TB), or a sexually transmitted disease (STD).
- Having unprotected sex with someone who shares these behaviors.
For women who plan to become pregnant, testing is even more important. If a woman is infected with HIV, medical care and certain drugs given during pregnancy can lower the chance of passing HIV to her baby. All women who are pregnant should be tested during each pregnancy.
Rapid Testing
Rapid Testing is a technology that allows an individual to obtain an HIV test result in approximately 20 minutes. One clear benefit of Rapid HIV Testing is the convenience of getting immediate results without the 1 to 2 week processing delay seen in traditional HIV testing methods.
